The half and side pass might seem like the “basics” but they’re very important maneuvers for barrel horses. In barrel racing we want to be able to move both hips and shoulders independently while in one place and also while in forward motion. Instead of independent movement, the half and side passes ask the horse to move both hips and shoulders together while staying soft. I get many questions about using reins and leg aids and still claiming to be reward based :) Aren’t rein aids and leg aids always pressure based? I would answer no. It is all in how you build them. Here we have one example. Me teaching indirect reins to move Tiny’s shoulders. The build up starts from the ground, here by using 2 mats to guide him and show him the movement I want to use to build on: moving from mat to mat. Once this is clear that we can happily walk from mart to mat I introduce a
